how do I take the handlebars off my vintage schwinn?
I loosened the large nut around the base and it will slide up and down, but won't come off. It seems like it is somehow connected to the tire fork???
Don't loosen the large nut around the base. That is the headset locknut, it's for the bearings in your headset.
There should be a standard or hex bolt in the very top of the stem. Loosen that.
